UPD. I got an important remark about the mistake with extrapolation. Put a new chart into the comments.Often in articles, I read the idea that there are X game releases on Steam each year, and this number is growing. The competition for players is increasing with each new game. While this is true, you can look at it differently.- In 2022, around 12,500 games were released on Steam in either a full release or early access.- Only about 700 of them have earned a million or more since then. What I mean is, when you make a good game, you're not competing with 12,500 other games; you're competing with about 1,000 other games. Actually, it's more because hits from previous years are also your competition. But then you should also consider competition from Netflix, going for a walk, books, and all other forms of entertainment. When making an RPG game for fans, you're not competing with horror games, for example. But comparing this to competition on mobile platforms, you could say that Steam is a much less competitive environment for A, AA, and AAA games. Thanks for the data to https://vginsights.com. Revenue information is not available for all 12,500 games from 2022, but I extrapolated. In reality, I believe that there's no revenue information for only those games that earned very little or nothing at all.

"We love to play games because we like to guess the future and want to see ourselves right."I wrote a short post about the link between the urge to play, the desire to know the future, and data-driven decisions. Of course, Konstellation covers most of those problems with automation and prediction. The half-year mark is here and gone, here are our thoughts on the games of H1 of 2023!______________So far, 2023 is shaping up to be an amazing year in games, and while it will have some bad spots on its page, it is undoubtedly a very strong first half. The year kicked off with Hi-Fi Rush by タンゴゲームワークス(Tango Gameworks), a stupendous game all around, the kind of which if you haven't played, you are definitely missing out, it's just pure fun.February was big, Wild Hearts, Atomic Heart, and Hogwarts Legacy dominated the news with each one being special in either how close to the heart the genre or the title is. Despite that, a hidden gem for Feb was Redemption Reapers by Adglobe, a great game in a niche genre that managed to really steal some good hours.March was going relatively slow, Wo Long was a lot of fun despite some technical issues, but the kicker came on March 30th. Dredge is just something else, the eerieness and feel of that game are out of this world. Amazing work by Black Salt GamesApril was a hunt for time, so many great titles came out, Everspace 2, The Mageseeker, Dead Island 2, Trinity Trigger, Cassette Beasts, and Jedi: Survivor, what a lineup. Hat's off to HoYoverse for kicking it out of the park with Honkai: Star Rail, after Genshin Impact, the bar was set very high and it's safe to say they did it again.May gave us Tears of the Kingdom, which is a very strong contender for game of the year. It overshadowed some other great games like Age of Wonders 4 by Triumph Studios. Super fun and memorable all around. And lastly, June, SF6, and Diablo 4, both did some outstanding things in their genres and delivered big time. But, the month ended with HP: Magic Awakened releasing, co-developed by Warner Bros. Studios and NetEase Games. And what a game this is, a modern mobile MMO with so many options, activities, and optional systems, it's hard to overlook and for us is already a contender for mobile game of the year. If you haven't tried it yet. Check it out. Overall, an amazing year thus far. We have our sights set on H2 with high expectations, game on!#gaming #2023 #videogames

https://lnkd.in/eJURbVzgThe New York Times is shutting down its math-based puzzle gameThe New York Times is shutting down Digits, the math-based puzzle game it launched in beta in April. If you visit the page for the game, you’ll see a message that says “This game is going away on August 8th.” If you click into the game, you’ll see a message as well.In Digits, the goal is to add, subtract, multiply, or divide six numbers to try and total a certain goal number. If you get the exact number, you get three stars, but you can get one or two stars depending on how close to the number you are. Screenshot by Jay Peters / The VergeIt was a fun concept, but it seems the game didn’t get the traction it needed to turn into a full-fledged NYT Games offering. “We always approached our experiment with Digits as a limited time beta test,” NYT spokesperson Jordan Cohen says in a statement to The Verge. “During this time, we learned a lot about how players engaged with the game and we’re grateful for their feedback. Right now, we’re focusing on growing the audience and engagement of our other games and look forward to testing more games in beta soon.”RelatedThe New York Times’ push into games meant a major ch...

Something game companies should think about since the companies relies on players1. Vote for what game should be developed nextExplanation: by doing so, you open the door to more ideas of what to try in the next project.(give the people what they want)2. NostalgiaBring back those good ol’ promotions such as demos (game codes) where if we order a pizza for an example we get a trial of ABC upcoming game.3. Stop with the games nobody asked for. We understand you have to give the upcoming devs a platform but let the date make sense.Don’t host experimental games on a major event like Nintendo direct or Ubisoft forward. People have high expectations and when you give them games like potato chip man, your event then loses viewers.Theres many that will stay (in hopes of a AAA title) but the new people you are trying to make fans will quickly lose interest. (I’m judging off the same feedback I see every year when games nobody asked for gets this big introduction and it’s just not good).

I can see the future of games. You can too.Look at whatever game was a surprise breakout hit.Look at how long it takes to develop a game like that. Let’s say 2 years in a hypothetical case.2 years from then the wave of similar titles will start hitting the market. Due to delays and differentiating features, about 3.5 years out will be the apex. Then a slow decline of releases unless there have been new breakout hits from the followers in the meanwhile, which reinvigorates the cycle. If it’s a “winner take all” genre, a market winner or three will be established and clones after this point have little chance after this apex. These are games with heavy social or PvP elements, or both.If it’s more pve or story focused you’ll get s steady trickle of small successes for a while thereafter as players seek new offerings for similar experiences, sticking within their comfort zone.Plan your schedules accordingly.

The Inner GameThere are two games afoot. The outer game and the inner game.It looks like the outer game is the main game. It’s more tangible, it has more visible outcomes and it is the game we’re all talking about. This happened, that might happen, I don’t want this to happen, how do I make sure that happens? And this is what we respond to. What we focus our time and attention on. This is the game we try to learn to rules of and then try to win.But there is another game. The inner game. The inner game is our thoughts, our feelings, our understanding of how they work, of how we work.Less tangible, way less visible and we often don’t like talking about it too much. But here’s the thing:The outer game is only and always a reflection of the inner game. When the inner game changes, the outer game changes. The rules in the outer game are determined by what happens in the inner game. And in the inner game, when we know the rules we can bend them...

The Bridge GameA comprehensive guide of bridge game: online games, variants, suits, hand evaluation, bidding systems, techniques, strategy, tactics. Contract bridge, usually known simply as bridge, is a trick-taking card game of skill for four players, usually sitting around a table, who form two partnerships, or "sides". The partners on each side sit opposite one another. The game consists of two main parts – bidding (or auction) and play; the rules of play are rather simple and similar to other trick-taking games. However, the bidding and associated conventions are much more complex, and represent the true learning barrier to new players. Also, there is an immense variety of techniques in play of the hand, whose effective use requires learning and experience.
